The Finder is the file manager components of OSX. It is the first program you see when you start up OSX. The Finder provides a way to manage files, the network, and hardware devices such as your printer. The Finder is similar to other file managers such as Windows Explorer.

The Finder is broken into three areas:

  1. The Menu Bar
  2. The Dock
  3. The Desktop

The Menu bar is placed at the top of your screen. It provides application menus, program status and the Apple system wide menu

The Dock is by default at the bottom of the screen. The Dock is the application launcher. It provides a convenient way to open frequently used programs.

The rest of the space on your screen is called your Desktop. Your Desktop is populated with Finder windows and running applications.
