The System Preferences application is used to set or change options that effect the entire system. The System Preferences Window

Your Mac installs a number of system preferences such as the “Display” and the “Date & Time” by default. 3rd party applications can also install their own preferences. This is typical of hardware devices. To access the System Preferences, either choose the icon from the Dock or click the Apple menu and select System Preferences.
