In order to import FLAC to iTunes, we will need to convert FLAC to Apple friendly audio formats.
If you care the quality of the output audio, converting FLAC to Apple Lossless audio is recommended. You can visit this guide for converting FLAC to Apple Lossless at http://www.bigasoft.com/articles/how-to-convert-flac-to-apple-lossless-audio.html then import FLAC to iTunes for enjoy or for sync.
If you do not care about the quality of the music, you can convert FLAC to MP3, a versatile audio format across system and devices then import the converted FLAC files to iTunes. You can find the step by step guide at http://www.bigasoft.com/articles/how-to-import-flac-to-itunes.html

Are you trying to backup your iPhoto Library or run iPhoto from an external drive?

If you navigate through Finder you should be able to find the iPhoto Library folder. If you want to run from the external drive, do the following.

To move your library, close iPhoto. In the Finder, drag the entire iPhoto Library folder from your iBook to your external hard drive. Drag the whole library as an entity; do not open it or disassemble in any way. (Dragging from one drive to another creates a copy, not a move.) Hold down the Option key as you launch iPhoto, select “Choose (or Find) Library” and navigate to the new location on the external drive. iPhoto should then open your library in exactly the same condition as before you moved it. Test the library for a while, and when you’re sure all is well you can delete the iPhoto Library folder on your iBook to free up the space.

If you just want a backup, copy the iPhoto Library folder to the external drive. The problem there is keeping it in sync everytime you change your photos. For that you should use Time Machine or Dropbox.

I must be missing something here. How does this synch the playlists? If I manually copy new music files into my iTunes music library folder in the Finder, then open iTunes, the music doesn't appear in the iTunes "music" folder.

You may also try <a href="http://www.codostudio.com" rel="nofollow">AutoTunes</a> - it synchronizes iTunes library with a folder. It won't synchronize your playlists and ratings, however it's much easier to setup and it can be used in several different ways such as <a href="http://www.codostudio.com/autotunes/synchronize-itunes-with-dropbox/" rel="nofollow">in combination with Dropbox</a>.
